Kandace
Kandace Duke, Boys & Girls Club 2015-2016 Youth of the Year
Kandace grew up in the Boys & Girls Club, officially becoming a member when she turned 6. She initially struggled with social anxiety but thanks to Unit Director Keith Goree and other staff members she eventually came out of her shell. Kandace became very involved with programming at the Club. She no longer feared being around the other children her age; instead, she looked forward to going to the Club. Homework that she once dreaded became easier with the help of Learning Center staff. As Kandace transitioned to a junior high member, the Club continued to play an important role in her life. The Club provided her with role models and effective programming geared towards this stage in her life. SMART Girls and SMART Moves taught her to respect herself and others. The Club was there to support her through the most difficult trial of her life. Kandace’s father was diagnosed with cancer and passed away when she was 12 years old. The Club provided stability for Kandace, welcoming her with open, caring arms. Kandace now serves as a role model for younger members. She remains active within the Club, her school, her church and her community. She is the epitome of what service to the Club and community looks like. Kandace will represent the Boys & Girls Club of Bartlesville in the Youth of the Year competition in March 2016.
